Chapter 7 - The Order in Claire’s Medical ChartDr. Patel personally reviewed Claire’s hospital chart.

He demanded guards.

A new room.

No electronic visitor list.

No hospital staff except those cleared by the FBI.

Only then did he agree to explain.

Adrian sat opposite him.

Claire listened remotely.

Gregory’s voice was weak.

“Nathan contacted me three years ago.”

“You said he died two years ago,” Adrian replied.

“He did.”

“Start at the beginning.”

Gregory described how Nathan had approached him with evidence of weaknesses in Bennett Global’s financial systems.

Gregory already had gambling debts.

Nathan offered a solution.

Help move small amounts from corporate accounts through fake vendors.

Nobody would notice.

For nearly a year, they stole slowly.

Hundreds of thousands.

Then millions.

Vanessa discovered the scheme.

Instead of exposing them, she joined.

“Why?” Adrian asked.

Gregory looked ashamed.

“She hated Claire.”

Claire’s voice came through the speaker.

“No. She wanted Adrian.”

Gregory shook his head.

“At first.”

Claire frowned.

“What changed?”

“Vanessa became obsessed with winning.”

Gregory explained that Vanessa’s feelings had transformed from romantic fixation into something uglier.

She wanted proof she could take whatever Claire had.

Her husband.

Her status.

Her home.

Even her future child’s inheritance.

Nathan encouraged it because Vanessa’s obsession made her useful.

Then Nathan died unexpectedly.

A private plane crashed off the coast of Portugal.

The body was recovered.

DNA confirmed.

Adrian had never been notified.

His relationship with Nathan had been nonexistent.

“So who took over?” Adrian asked.

Gregory stared at him.

“That’s the problem.”

After Nathan died, someone contacted Gregory using Nathan’s secure channel.

The person knew every detail of the scheme.

They called themselves Grey.

They doubled the theft.

Expanded the fraud.

Then began targeting Claire.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You said they’re close to me.”

“Because Grey knew things nobody outside your house should know.”

“Such as?”

Gregory looked toward the speaker.

“Claire’s medical history.”

Adrian went still.

“Explain.”

“When Claire started fertility treatment last year, Grey knew before the press. Before the foundation board. Before almost everyone.”

Claire felt cold.

Only family and medical staff knew.

Gregory continued.

“Grey knew when the embryo transfer happened.”

Adrian stood.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who had that information?”

“Your doctors. Your assistant. Household security.”

“And?”

Gregory hesitated.

“Your mother.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Eleanor Bennett.

Seventy-one years old.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Chairwoman emeritus of Bennett Global.

A woman who loved Adrian fiercely.

And had never hidden her belief that Claire was beneath the family.

Claire closed her eyes.

Eleanor had opposed their marriage.

Not publicly.

Never crudely.

She simply believed Adrian should have married someone from their world.

Vanessa Cole had been Eleanor’s preferred choice.

“No,” Adrian said.

Gregory shrugged weakly.

“I’m not accusing her.”

“You just did.”

“I’m telling you what Grey knew.”

Adrian left the room.

He called his mother.

She answered on the second ring.

“Adrian.”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Stay there.”

Silence.

“Why?”

“I’m coming.”

Eleanor’s Fifth Avenue residence occupied three floors.

Adrian arrived with federal investigators.

His mother stood in the library wearing a cream suit.

She looked offended when agents entered.

“What is this?”

Adrian placed evidence on her desk.

“Nathan died two years ago.”

Eleanor’s expression cracked.

Barely.

But Adrian saw it.

“You knew.”

She sat down.

“I was informed.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“You hated him.”

“He was my brother.”

“He tried to destroy you.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“He was working with Gregory before he died.”

Eleanor stared.

“I don’t understand.”

“Someone continued his operation.”

She shook her head.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“They knew Claire’s fertility schedule.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“So you think I attacked your wife?”

“I think Vanessa had information she shouldn’t have.”

“Vanessa is unstable.”

“You invited her into our lives repeatedly.”

“I believed she would have made a suitable partner for you.”

“I married Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Yet you kept Vanessa close.”

Eleanor looked away.

Adrian suddenly noticed something.

On the bookshelf behind her sat a silver photograph frame.

Claire and Adrian’s wedding.

Beside it another photograph.

Adrian as a child.

Standing between Eleanor and a younger man.

Nathan.

Despite everything, Eleanor had kept his photograph.

Claire arrived unexpectedly an hour later.

Her doctor had discharged her under strict conditions.

She entered with Daniel beside her.

Adrian was furious.

“You should be resting.”

“I can rest after I stop wondering whether your mother helped someone try to destroy us.”

Eleanor stood.

“Claire.”

Claire looked directly at her.

“Did you give Vanessa information about my fertility treatments?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Adrian stared.

“Mother.”

Finally Eleanor said, “I may have mentioned dates.”

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“To Vanessa?”

“She was asking about you.”

“Why?”

“She said she wanted to send flowers.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You gave a woman who hated me information about when I was trying to become pregnant?”

“I didn’t know—”

“No. You didn’t want to know.”

Eleanor flinched.

Claire continued.

“For three years you treated Vanessa like the woman Adrian should have married.”

“I never wished you harm.”

“You made her feel entitled to my marriage.”

That landed.

Eleanor sat.

For the first time, she looked old.

“I thought she would eventually accept reality.”

Claire shook her head.

“You fed the fantasy.”

A federal agent interrupted.

“We need to ask about Nathan.”

Eleanor’s hands tightened.

She finally admitted the truth.

Nathan had contacted her several months before his death.

He claimed he had changed.

He wanted reconciliation.

Eleanor secretly met him twice.

Adrian looked devastated.

“You hid that from me.”

“He was my son.”

“What did you give him?”

“Nothing.”

The agent placed a photograph on the desk.

Nathan entering Bennett Global headquarters using Eleanor’s private elevator.

Six weeks before his death.

Her face went white.

“I didn’t know.”

“Your badge was used.”

“I never gave it to him.”

“Did anyone have access?”

Eleanor thought.

“My driver. My assistant.”

“Who was your assistant?”

Eleanor looked toward Adrian.

The room became silent.

“Thomas Reed.”

Adrian knew the name.

Thomas had worked for Eleanor for fifteen years.

He had been at every family holiday.

He knew every address.

Every schedule.

Every medical appointment.

Every argument.

Thomas retired eighteen months earlier.

Approximately three months after Nathan’s death.

Daniel ran a background check.

What he found changed everything.

Thomas Reed had never retired.

He had changed his name.

His birth records were falsified.

His Social Security identity belonged to a child who died in 1974.

And a facial-recognition search against archived photographs found a match.

Thomas Reed had once been known by another name.

Michael Greyson.

Former accountant.

Former business partner of Adrian’s father.

A man convicted of embezzlement thirty-four years earlier after Eleanor testified against him.

Greyson lost everything.

His career.

His marriage.

His home.

His name.

And apparently, he had spent the next three decades getting close enough to the Bennett family to take theirs.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Mr. Grey.”

Claire whispered, “Thomas.”

The trusted assistant.

The man who had arranged her doctor appointments.

Booked the summer estate.

Coordinated security.

Sent Vanessa gifts on Eleanor’s behalf.

He had been inside the family for fifteen years.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A familiar older voice spoke.

“Hello, Adrian.”

Adrian felt every muscle tighten.

“Thomas.”

A quiet laugh.

“You always were quicker than your father.”

“Where is Vanessa?”

“Safe.”

“From police?”

“From Gregory.”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Why are you doing this?”

Thomas paused.

“Because your family destroyed mine.”

“You stole from us.”

“Your father stole first.”

“That isn’t what the court found.”

“Courts are purchased by men like your father.”

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“You attacked my wife.”

“No.”

Thomas sounded offended.

“Vanessa attacked your wife. Never confuse the weapon with the hand that points it.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then you pointed her.”

Thomas heard her.

His voice changed.

“Claire.”

Adrian immediately moved between her and the phone as though Thomas could reach through it.

Claire answered anyway.

“You underestimated me.”

Thomas chuckled.

“No.”

Then he said something that wiped the confidence from her face.

“I underestimated your doctor.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“If Dr. Patel had followed the medication instructions placed in your chart last night, we would not be having this conversation.”

Adrian’s blood turned to ice.

Claire’s hand moved to her stomach.

Thomas laughed softly.

“You’re still looking at Vanessa.”

The line went dead.

Adrian stared at Claire.

Someone had altered her medical chart.

May you like

The kick had not been the only attempt.

It had been only the first.
