Chapter 9 - The Woman Claire Chose to SaveThe coordinates arrived at 6:00 a.m.

Adrian covered her body.
Security agents rushed toward the windows.
The laser disappeared.
No shot followed.
Snipers searched rooftops.
Nothing.
The laser had likely come from a vehicle hundreds of yards away.
A warning.
Not an assassination attempt.
Thomas wanted fear.
Claire was furious.
“He keeps using the baby.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“We end this.”
Federal investigators designed a controlled response.
Adrian would pretend to cooperate.
Thomas had demanded transfer of voting control in Bennett Global.
The legal documents would be prepared.
Fake.
Traceable.
Adrian would send confirmation and insist on delivering biometric authorization personally.
Thomas might refuse.
But investigators believed greed and vengeance would pull him closer.
Claire listened.
Then said, “He won’t come for Adrian.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Why not?” Daniel asked.
“Because Adrian isn’t the ending.”
Claire pointed toward Thomas’s basement timelines.
“I am.”
Adrian immediately objected.
“No.”
Claire ignored him.
“Thomas could have targeted Adrian directly years ago. Instead he built everything around isolating him.”
She looked at the investigators.
“The false affair. The pregnancy. Vanessa. The attack.”
A federal profiler nodded slowly.
“He wants Mr. Bennett to experience loss.”
“Exactly.”
Claire continued.
“He believes Adrian’s father destroyed his family. So he wants Adrian to watch his family disappear.”
Adrian stood.
“You’re not bait.”
“I didn’t say I was.”
“That is exactly what you’re saying.”
Claire looked at him.
“I’m saying we understand his goal.”
The plan shifted.
Instead of offering Claire physically, investigators created the illusion that she and Adrian had separated for safety.
Claire would move to a supposed medical retreat outside the city.
The location would appear through hacked channels Thomas was known to monitor.
In reality, the facility would be controlled by law enforcement.
Claire hated the idea.
Adrian hated it more.
“You stay nowhere without me.”
“If you’re there, Thomas won’t approach.”
“Good.”
“Then we don’t catch him.”
“I don’t care.”
Claire stared at her husband.
“Yes, you do.”
“No. I care about you.”
“And what happens after the baby is born?”
Adrian said nothing.
“We spend the rest of our lives hiding because Thomas is still out there?”
His jaw tightened.
Claire reached for his hand.
“I’m not asking you to leave me unprotected.”
“I’m not doing it.”
“Adrian.”
“No.”
For the first time since the hospital, they argued.
Not politely.
Not carefully.
He was terrified.
She was tired of being treated like fragile glass.
“You don’t get to lock me away because you’re scared!”
“I watched someone kick you while you were pregnant!”
“And I survived!”
“You almost didn’t!”
The room went silent.
Claire stared.
Adrian’s eyes were wet.
He turned away.
When he spoke again, his voice was broken.
“I heard the doctor say contractions.”
Claire softened.
“I know.”
“I thought I was losing both of you.”
She walked toward him.
“You didn’t.”
“Not yet.”
Claire embraced him.
The anger left both of them.
Eventually, they compromised.
Claire would participate from the secure medical retreat.
Adrian would remain nearby, outside Thomas’s expected view.
Federal agents would control every entrance.
For forty-eight hours, nothing happened.
Then Vanessa appeared.
Not physically.
A call.
She contacted Claire directly.
“Please don’t hang up.”
Claire nearly did.
The woman who attacked her sounded exhausted.
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Police are looking for you.”
“I know.”
“You kicked me.”
Vanessa began crying.
Claire felt no sympathy.
“You tried to alter my medical chart.”
“No.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“I didn’t do that.”
“Doyle said—”
“Thomas told Doyle it was me.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
Vanessa took a shaking breath.
“But I hit you. I kicked you. I lied when Adrian came in.”
Each admission sounded painful.
“I did horrible things.”
Claire said nothing.
“But I didn’t try to kill your baby.”
“Then who did?”
“Thomas.”
Claire looked toward the agents recording the call.
“Where are you?”
“He has me.”
The line filled with static.
Claire’s pulse increased.
“He told everyone I was hiding willingly.”
“Are you?”
“No.”
Vanessa started crying harder.
“He took me after the airport.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew too much.”
Claire stared at Adrian through the observation glass.
He had heard everything.
“What does he want?”
“You.”
Claire already knew.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know. Underground. There are trains.”
An agent immediately began analyzing background audio.
Vanessa continued.
“He says Adrian has to know what losing a family feels like.”
“Vanessa, listen to me.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Stay focused.”
Claire’s voice became firm.
“Tell me what you see.”
“Concrete walls. Pipes. Old signs.”
“What signs?”
“One says Hudson.”
Agents began typing.
“Anything else?”
“There’s a metal door with numbers. 1912.”
Historic transit tunnels.
Abandoned infrastructure.
New York and New Jersey had dozens.
Then Claire heard something.
A horn.
Two long blasts.
A pause.
Another blast.
A maritime signal.
Agents cross-referenced locations near old Hudson transit infrastructure.
One possible site emerged.
An abandoned freight tunnel beneath a decommissioned pier.
Before they could confirm, Thomas entered Vanessa’s room.
His voice sounded distant.
“You disappoint me.”
Vanessa screamed.
The call ended.
Police mobilized.
Adrian grabbed a vest.
Daniel stopped him.
“You stay here.”
“No.”
“Thomas wants you emotional.”
“He has Vanessa.”
Daniel stared.
“You hate Vanessa.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“She attacked my wife.”
“And?”
“And I don’t leave people with kidnappers.”
Claire watched him.
Despite everything Vanessa had done, Adrian would still help save her.
It reminded Claire why she had married him.
Agents entered the abandoned tunnel forty-three minutes later.
They found ropes.
Food.
A mattress.
Vanessa’s blood.
But no Vanessa.
Thomas had moved her.
On the wall was a message:
TOO SLOW.
Below it, another line.
CLAIRE COMES ALONE NEXT TIME.
Then a phone rang.
The agents found it beneath the mattress.
Thomas was calling.
Claire answered remotely.
“You wanted me?”
Thomas chuckled.
“I knew you would understand eventually.”
“I want Vanessa alive.”
“She assaulted you.”
“That doesn’t mean you get to murder her.”
Silence.
Claire continued.
“You think you’re punishing Adrian by proving people are disposable.”
Thomas’s voice hardened.
“You have twenty-four hours.”
“For what?”
“You’ll receive coordinates.”
“And if I refuse?”
Thomas paused.
Then Vanessa screamed in the background.
Claire’s face drained.
“Stop!”
The scream ended.
Thomas spoke calmly.
“Tomorrow.”
The line went dead.
Adrian turned to investigators.
“We track him.”
“No usable signal.”
Claire stared at the phone.
Thomas had finally made a mistake.
Not technical.
Emotional.
He believed Claire cared about saving Vanessa.
He was right.
And that meant Claire could control the next move.
She looked at Adrian.
“He wants me alone.”
“No.”
“I won’t be.”
May you like
She looked at the agents.
“But he needs to believe I am.”
