Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the RumorsElena Price refused to speak on the phone.

He refused.
Even when hospital security told him the footage was urgent, he stayed beside his wife until the obstetrician confirmed that the baby still had a heartbeat.
The examination room was dim except for the ultrasound monitor.
Claire lay beneath a white blanket, pale and trembling.
Adrian stood beside her with one hand locked around hers.
Neither spoke as the doctor moved the ultrasound probe.
Then the sound filled the room.
Fast.
Strong.
Steady.
Their baby’s heartbeat.
Claire burst into tears.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For the first time since finding her on the floor, some of the tension left his body.
Dr. Maya Patel continued examining the screen.
“The heartbeat is reassuring,” she said. “But we’re keeping Claire overnight. She experienced abdominal trauma, and we need to monitor for placental complications and early labor.”
Adrian nodded.
“Whatever she needs.”
Claire turned toward him.
“Vanessa is going to lie.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“She already did.”
“I know.”
Claire searched his face.
“Do you believe me?”
Adrian stared at her as though the question itself hurt.
“Claire.”
“You hesitated.”
The words were quiet.
They hit harder than shouting.
Adrian looked down.
For three seconds in the suite, he had looked at both women.
Three seconds.
Claire had noticed.
“I walked in and saw you both on the floor,” he said.
“You looked at her.”
“I looked at the room.”
“She said I attacked her.”
“And I never believed her.”
Claire looked away.
Adrian leaned closer.
“I should have asked you first. I’m sorry.”
Her eyes remained fixed on the window.
Vanessa had been poisoning their marriage for months.
Anonymous messages.
Photographs taken out of context.
Whispers among their friends.
Rumors that Adrian had once promised to marry Vanessa.
Claire had tried not to become suspicious.
But Vanessa knew exactly where to press.
Adrian kissed Claire’s forehead.
“I’m going to security.”
She finally looked at him.
“Don’t confront her alone.”
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“That’s the last thing you need to worry about.”
Adrian reached the hospital security office six minutes later.
Marcus Hill was waiting.
So was hospital attorney Rachel Sloan.
Marcus closed the door.
“Before I show you this, Mr. Bennett, I need you to understand something. This camera was temporary. It was installed because of an internal theft investigation.”
Adrian barely heard him.
“Play it.”
Marcus pressed a key.
The recording began.
There was no audio at first because the camera had been installed primarily to monitor movement.
Claire entered.
She sat near the window.
Five minutes later, Vanessa walked in.
Adrian watched the women speak.
He watched Vanessa move closer.
He watched Claire point toward the door.
Then Vanessa shoved her.
Adrian’s hands tightened.
Claire struck the marble table.
He stopped breathing.
But the worst was still coming.
Vanessa grabbed Claire.
Claire tried to retreat.
Then Vanessa raised her right leg.
The red stiletto drove into Claire’s side.
Adrian’s chair scraped backward.
Marcus paused the video.
Adrian stood.
“Play it.”
“Sir—”
“Play it.”
The footage continued.
Claire fell.
Vanessa stood over her.
Then Adrian entered.
The video captured everything.
Even without sound, there was no question who had attacked whom.
Marcus switched to a second recording source.
“The camera synchronized with the hospital’s experimental room-assistance system,” he explained. “The system captures short audio segments when it detects sudden impact above a threshold.”
Adrian stared at him.
“There’s audio?”
Marcus nodded.
He pressed play.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“You think being pregnant makes you untouchable?”
Claire answered.
“Stay away from me.”
Then later:
“You trapped him.”
“I married him three years before I became pregnant.”
Another pause.
Then Claire said something Adrian could barely hear.
“You mean your lies didn’t work.”
Vanessa grabbed her.
The kick followed.
Adrian looked away from the monitor.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Rachel Sloan said, “The hospital has contacted law enforcement.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“Where is Vanessa?”
Marcus checked his screen.
“She left the hospital fourteen minutes ago.”
Adrian pulled out his phone.
He called his head of security.
“Daniel.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Locate Vanessa Cole.”
A pause.
“Is this a protection request?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at the frozen video.
“It’s an evidence-preservation request. Nobody touches her. Nobody threatens her. Just find out where she goes.”
“Yes, sir.”
Adrian hung up.
Rachel studied him.
“You should let police handle this.”
“I intend to.”
“Good.”
“But there’s something else.”
He looked at Marcus.
“Vanessa knew Claire would be alone.”
Marcus frowned.
“She could have followed her from the gala.”
“No.”
Adrian remembered the schedule.
Claire’s rest suite had been changed at the last minute because another room had a plumbing problem.
Only six people knew the new suite number.
Adrian.
Claire.
The obstetrician.
His personal assistant.
The hospital event coordinator.
And Vanessa’s older brother, Gregory Cole, who sat on the foundation board.
Adrian felt cold.
“How did Vanessa know which room Claire was in?”
Marcus looked at Rachel.
Rachel slowly sat straighter.
Adrian continued.
“She didn’t wander around seventeen floors guessing.”
Marcus opened the access records.
“What time did Mrs. Bennett arrive?”
“Approximately 9:17.”
Marcus typed.
“Suite access was logged at 9:18.”
“Who accessed the file?”
Marcus studied the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“What?”
Marcus turned the monitor.
A digital record showed that Claire’s private suite assignment had been viewed from an administrative account at 9:13 p.m.
The account belonged to hospital board member Gregory Cole.
Vanessa’s brother.
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
This was no longer one woman losing control.
Someone had helped her find Claire.
Someone had known she was going upstairs alone.
Adrian called Rachel.
“Tell the police they need Gregory Cole’s access logs too.”
Before Rachel could respond, Adrian’s phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A woman whispered.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Yes?”
“My name is Elena Price. I work for Vanessa.”
Adrian stepped away from the table.
“What do you want?”
“I think I know why she attacked your wife.”
His heart accelerated.
“Tell me.”
Elena hesitated.
May you like
Then she said something Adrian had never expected.
“Because Vanessa believed Claire was about to discover what she and Gregory had been stealing from you for almost two years.”
